Temporary generators expected to boost Belize’s electricity supply by mid-September

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) says temporary generators being installed at its Westlake facility should begin operating by mid-September as the company works to strengthen the country’s electricity supply.  The generators will initially remain in place for six months and will provide backup during periods of high demand or when another major source of electricity becomes unavailable. BEL says it first warned of a possible electricity shortage in October 2025, prompting Cabinet to approve emergency measures to secure additional power. The update follows two major outages over the past week. On both occasions, Belize was not producing enough electricity locally to meet demand when the supply from Mexico was temporarily lost.  BEL says local production has been affected by seasonal conditions, maintenance work and reduced output from some facilities. While the temporary generators should provide some relief, the company cautions that planned power interruptions may still be necessary if a major source of electricity is unexpectedly lost.  The generators are a short-term measure, as Belize will still need additional capacity until larger solar and battery-storage projects come online.
