The People’s Constitution Commission (PCC) is calling on Belizeans to submit their recommendations for constitutional reform in writing. The PCC announced that it has entered phase three of its Stakeholder Outreach Campaign, to engage the public in the reform process. The call for the public to submit submissions falls in line with the commission’s decision to limit public consultations in the early part of 2024. During our last interview, Chairman of the PCC, Anthony Chanona, said that the commission is trying to avoid being lumped along with campaigning for the upcoming municipal elections. For context, here is Chanona’s statement.

Anthony Chanona, Chairman, PCC: “I have purposely decided not to put to the commission to work in the public space in the months of January to March because that is electioneering for municipal elections and I do not want the commission to be seen in the public space during election. This work is not about electioneering and that perception could be easily created. So we will buckle down, take all the questions, all the data, look at the constitution put them into thematic areas and then in April we come back to the people in the consultation process.”
We reached out to the commission today for comment on phase three of the campaign, but Chanona and the Deputy Chairman were unavailable for comment. Those wishing to submit comments, concerns, or recommendations to the PCC, have until February 19 to do so.
