Villager Killed in Road Traffic Incident in Guinea Grass

A Guinea Grass villager lost his life in a road traffic incident this morning. Around 5:30, 54-year-old Maximo Chan was attempting to board a bus when he was hit by a vehicle on the village’s main road. 24-year-old, Roberto Deudanes, the vehicle’s driver, told police he was overtaking the bus, heading in the same direction, when Chan ran in front of his SUV. Duedanes says he attempted to swerve away but hit Chan with the right side of the vehicle’s fender. Chan reportedly sustained severe head injuries and was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Guinea Grass Chairman, Benito Uck, says Chan was well-known and notes that the council will appeal to the central government to install more speed bumps in the growing community.

Benito Uck, Chairman, Guinea Grass Village: “He was a church man, he always assists in the Catholic Church. He’s a well known compadre for many residents in the Guinea Grass Community and on weekend he always has his stall, small stall selling popcorn, slush and so forth and that is how he has his extra living during weekends. I am always asking the drivers you know that is a main road, that’s the main that that area in Guinea Grass Village twenty four hours they traverse that area from Shipyard Community to Orange Walk and back and forth and I already have appealed the MIDH that we need more bumps and if they are listening I hope they could do this as quick as possible from day one I am there calling them and trying to get assistance for more bumps in the community because we only have two since they paved that main road inside the village.”

Deudanes is in police custody and was served with a notice of intended prosecution.
