Belize City Woman Faces Charges for Holding Mistakenly Transferred Funds

A Belize City woman will be facing charges in the high court for keeping over forty-seven thousand dollars that was accidentally transferred into her account. Thirty-two-year-old security guard Kamera Belisle appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today charged with a single count of retaining wrongful credit. No plea was taken from Belisle as the matter will be handled on indictment. She was granted bail of six thousand dollars plus two sureties of three thousand dollars each, which she met. On March 8, Belisle received over forty-seven thousand, nine hundred dollars in her account due to an error in a bank deposit. Twenty-five-year-old Prem Balani, accountant at Nandos Wholesale, reported that the deposit was intended for Bi Yun Chen at Lowes Supermarket who is a sub-agent for the Belize Government Lottery. Days after the deposit was made Balani received a call inquiring about the payment and that’s when the mistake was discovered. Balani reported the matter to police and they got in touch with the Financial Intelligence Unit. The FIU tracked down Belisle through her account and she was arrested on April 12. Belisle is due back in court on June 24.
