Over the past week we’ve been following the preparations of Belizean boxer Amir “King Mir” Rudon, as he prepares for his upcoming fight against Guatemalan fighter Juan “Toro” Mendez. The Belize Boxing Development Council (BBDC) says that the fight, happening this Saturday at the Swift Hall in Belize City, will be one for the record books, as it could mean major title opportunities for Rudon. President of the BBDC Javier Romero, says that the stakes have never been higher for Rudon, since this opponent is his toughest one to date.

Javier Romero, President, Belize Boxing Development Council: “This is his most significant bout to date. Juan Mendez Gian is ranked number two in all of Guatemala. He fought for the Guatemalan National championship. He has an outstanding record of eight wins only three losses and seven of those eight wins by knockout. So Juan Mendez Gian is a knockout artist. So he has a lot of power in his punches and he presents a signifIcant challenge to Amir Rudon and his unbeaten record. As the regulator of boxing here in Belize we try to maintain our objectivity but as a sports fan, as a person that is knowledgeable about the sport of boxing we see Amir Rudon as the present and the future of Belizean boxing and with this match on Saturday night if he is successful the next step is to have him fight for a championship in September. More than likely he will be fighting for the WBC Youth World Championship. So this bout carries huge significance for boxing here in Belize. So if he doesn’t win then more than likely he won’t be fighting for that belt but if he does win on Saturday night come Sunday we will be in talks with the WBC to see what opportunities are available for Amir for that championship bout in September. So it is a high stakes scenario come Saturday night in which he will be fighting well not only for himself but the future of boxing here in Belize.”
Rudon, has a career of six wins, no losses and invited us to Alpha Boxing Gym over the weekend to show some of his preparations for the fight. Rudon says that he is aware of how much is riding on the fight and he is confident in his preparation.

Amir “King” Rudon, Lightweight Boxing Champ: “It seems like he is a big puncher but nevertheless I’m preparing and I’m confident in my training that we’ll bring the victory home. I’m confident and next week Saturday on the fight day is also my mom’s birthday so I’ll give her the victory as well. It’s definitely a stepping stone for what’s to come. I keep want to fight against better opponents, better names, bigger fights, step up into competition and fight for regional titles and those stuff so this is definitely sort of a test. I think it’s safe to say it’s a test to see if we’re ready for what’s to come and I’m confident in passing the test for sure. It is with utmost pride and honor being in this position and I don’t take it lightly or anything like that. It’s definitely been a long journey and I appreciate all the support I’m receiving. I’m not alone. Although it’s a lonely sport I’m not alone. I have a great team of people around me, I have you guys, I have the country’s support, and I appreciate every single thing and we’ll go to the top together.”
The event was originally set to be held at the Mexican Sports Center, but the BBDC says that there was a last minute venue change due to unforeseen circumstances. We note that Swift Hall is where Rudon won the lightweight championship title. The upcoming fight with Mendez is his debut into the super-lightweight division.
