Newly Opened Honorary Consulate in Chetumal: A Lifeline for Belizeans in Distress

Have you ever wondered where to seek help if you have an emergency while in neighboring Chetumal, Quintana Roo? Well, based on your situation, you can seek assistance at the Honorary Consulate of Belize on Calle Flores Magon just off Avenidas Insurgentes in Chetumal.  The office was recently inaugurated and will serve as an extension of the Embassy of Belize in Mexico.  Belize’s Ambassador to Mexico Oscar Arnold spoke to Love News about the support provided by the office to Belizeans in distress. 

Oscar Arnold, Belize Ambassador to Mexico: “I would want to limit what individuals believe is an emergency because for everyone it’s different. But for example, if there’s been an accident and there’s Belizeans who are injured and need medical treatment and for some reason or one way or the other they can’t get it right there and then or if there’s an issue with some authority figure again they can contact the honorary consul’s office who then will also contact us here at the embassy. But then they are on the ground there where they would be able to provide some services. We’ve had individuals who ran into several issues late at night when the offices are closed, whether it’s immigration issues, customs issues, or with any other official authority of the municipality. Again, they can get in touch with the honorary consul’s office for them to provide services. I will, however, state that all our missions along with our honorary consul serve through the courtesy of the Mexican government, it’s through their courtesies that they’ve allowed us to set up offices here. So it’s not to say that if there is an issue where the services of the honorary consul is needed it doesn’t mean that issue will go away right away. We still have to work the process and we still have to ensure that we are governed by the laws of Mexico and that we do everything by due process.”
