Briceno Administration Distributes Hundreds of Land Parcels to New Owners

The Briceno Administration says it has distributed hundreds of parcels of land to first-time landowners country-wide. Since taking office, the government has held mobile land clinics to resolve long-standing land issues and distribute land. The venture seeks to empower citizens and establish new communities for Belizeans to develop. Over the weekend, Orange Walk East Area Representative Kevin Bernard spoke on how the Ministry of Natural Resources has assisted his constituents in becoming property owners.

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health and Wellness: “Distributed I think over 300 lots already and we are now almost complete with our… I’m just waiting for the parcel numbers now to be assigned. We have almost at 80% complete and I think by next week I should have the rest. So we want to trigger an internal and clinic where we are going to be distributing over 550 house lots to first-time landowners. This is a new subdivision that we did one to ensure that we could give people who deserve a piece of land and access to a piece of land. We’re also at the same time working with the ministry and the Minister of Natural Resources to see how we can get new farmlands identified for that area so that we could also assist farmers who need or some people who want to do little farming, 10-acre plots, so that they could have something to sustain for themselves. It’s again, like you said, it’s about empowering our people and there’s many ways you do that by giving them the resource that they need to be able to. We have hard-working Belizeans and we have people that don’t want hands-out, they just want that hands-up so that you could give them the opportunity and they can get ahead of life. When we have delivered over six homes so far and constructing two more homes to needy single parents and young families you see the smile in these faces, the joy and the reaction of the children. It gives you great joy when you see these things that you have uplifted a family, you have given them hope and you have given them something that they can make life better for themselves and their family.”
