Opposition Leader Criticizes PM for ‘Disingenuous’ Remarks on Independence Day Speech

Yesterday, we told you of a gentlemen’s agreement that both the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader had regarding sanitizing their speeches on Independence Day. We were initially informed that both leaders amicably agreed to maintain patriotism at the forefront of their speeches.  In an interview with the Prime Minister, however, the narrative changed when he said that the decision was made to save Barrow and the country an embarrassment as has become the norm with Barrow’s speeches. This morning, the Opposition Leader responded to the Prime Minister’s remarks, saying that Briceno was being disingenuous.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “The Prime Minister had reached out and we discussed the matter and we agreed that we would forgo the normal Independence Day attacks which again Prime Minister is such a dishonest person it’s hard to be cordial with him and find common ground with him because he lies profusely. Everyone knows that John Briceño as the Leader of the Opposition was one of the worst terrorists of Independence Day. He would go, it would be the Independence Day massacre when he would go and attack Dean Barrow, it was terrible and you the media those of you like Marisol who have been there you remember that. He never gave any statesman speech or any patriotic speech so to pretend as if my speeches were anything different what he can’t do he can’t win that battle. So he has put up the white flag and said you know what I can’t take it. Please. However I do concede that there is a time and place for everything and it is long overdue that certain days be depoliticized, the 10th and 21st are two of our most important days in the calendar should certainly qualify for that so I had no difficulty restraining my remarks in the Independence Day speech to patriotism and celebrating the 21st our independence and to just give the state of the nation today. But certainly could not restrain to just this year because it’s been four years on the cusp of the next general elections and so an overview to me was definitely in sight.”

With the addresses done this week, Saturday’s speeches are expected to be apolitical.
