A series of meetings concluded last week in London, UK where Belize’s legal team met to discuss the territorial court cases with Guatemala and Honduras. With a heavy case load at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Belize’s matters are yet to have a set date scheduled for oral hearings. Agent to the International Court of Justice, Assad Shoman, made an appearance on The Morning Show today where he explained that both Belize and Guatemala have submitted its memorials to the ICJ.
The other matter before the ICJ is the case surrounding the Sapodilla Cayes which Honduras has claimed as theirs. As a result, Belize took Honduras to the court with an aim to settle ownership. Ambassador Shoman indicated that when it comes to the Sapodilla Cayes, both Guatemala and Honduras have laid a claim on that territory. Guatemala had attempted to join the court matter as an interested party but that request was rejected by Honduras.
The Belize Guatemala territorial case was lodged at the ICJ on June 7, 2019.
