Indigenous Solutions to Climate Change Highlighted in Belize City Cultural Consultation

Representatives from cultural community organizations gathered in Belize City today for consultations centered on climate change. The event, titled, Indigenous Solutions to Climate Change, saw representation from Kriol, Maya, Mestizo and Garifuna cultural groups. The consultations provided a platform for the participants to share their unique perspectives about how climate change affects their communities. They also had the opportunity to communicate virtually with climate change experts. Felicita Cantun, who represented the Guardians of Culture Maya women’s group, said that participating was necessary as climate change is directly impacting her community’s food security.

Participants representing the Garifuna culture shared what they are hoping to learn and take back to their communities.

The initiative was supported by the University of California’s Santa Barbara Center for Coast Climate Community Resilience
