To promote recycling as a means of battling climate change, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Belmopan City Council, teamed up to distribute metal garbage drums to several high schools. The drums were sourced through the JICA Alumni Association of Belize (JAAB) Solid Waste Recycle Project and distributed yesterday. Belmopan Mayor Pablo Cawich said that the JAAB is also assisting with an education campaign to teach students about solid waste management.
At the distribution ceremony, Roberto Matus, a Member of JAAB Community, explained that each school was given three types of drums for three different kinds of waste. Yoshikazu Tachihara, Resident Representative for JICA, also spoke with students about the importance of keeping the environment clean.
The schools that received drums were Orange Walk Technical High School, Excelsior High School, Our Lady of Guadalupe High School, Our Lady of Guadalupe Primary School, St. Martin Government Primary School, Garden City Primary School, and Kuxlin Ha Government Primary School.
