Western Regional Hospital Expands Cancer Care Services

The Western Regional Hospital is now the first public health facility to offer free mammogram services, through a donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Yesterday the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the church officially opened the new Mammography Room at the WRH. The new room, equipped with a digital mammographer, will aid in ongoing efforts to combat breast cancer in Belize by providing screening services for early detection. Dr. Stephanie Rivero, a radiologist at the WRH, said that the donation is historic, and will make screening available to patients from western and southern Belize.

Ryan Olsen, President of the Central America Chapter of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, said that the donation came through collaboration with various entities. Olsen says that the donation to support the hospital is in line with the church’s core beliefs.

The total value of the donation Olsen says he hopes that more donations can be made in the future.
