Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is also gearing up for the arrival of Tropical Storm Sara. The utility company issued a statement this evening, saying it was on high alert and that teams, resources, and equipment have been mobilized to address any damage. The utility company warns that heavy rains and strong winds associated with Tropical Storm Sara could cause power outages. BEL explains that safety mechanisms in the power system may trigger intermittent outages if lightning or falling tree branches come into contact with power lines. BEL says that, while teams are standing by, teams must be able to carry out their work safely. The company said quote, “In the event there is a loss of power supply due to damage from Tropical Storm Sara, we will dispatch our teams to conduct repairs and restore power as soon as the “All Clear” is given and it is safe to do so,” end of quote. BEL also warned that, to protect lives, the company may disconnect power in areas with hazardous electrical conditions caused by improper connections.
