Dr. Angel Cal Releases Book on Historic Battle of Orange Walk

Dr.Angel Cal’s “The Battle of Orange Walk” was officially released this morning. The publication reflects on the 1872 resistance led by Marcus Canul in Northern Belize, shedding light on a pivotal yet often overlooked chapter in Belizean history. Through research and transcription, Dr.Cal was able to unearth untold stories of resilience and resistance. Love News spoke to Cal about why it is important to not allow the erasure of The Battle of Orange Walk to take place in our history.

A big part of this release is clearing up the misconceptions that surround our history. Noting that much of our history was recorded by British colonizers. The narratives have been pushed in the past by the government of an independent Belize. Dr.Cal mentioned that this is why history must be analyzed from different perspectives.

The book’s release is the result of a collaborative effort involving UB’s History Department, the Intercultural Indigenous Language Institute, the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR), and the Belize Archives and Records Service.
