Joshua Magana, the son of Miriam Cordon, has spoken out about his agony pertaining to his mother’s death. Magana took to social media today, expressing anger at the driver who crashed into the Chevy Equinox that his mother was in on December 2. Magana wrote, quote, “You were so piss drunk that you don’t remember the traffic accident! This is always the case with reckless drunken drivers”. End of quote. The driver of the Ford Van was Leroy Nunez who has since been taken to court for driving with alcohol above the prescribed limit, among other charges. Love News spoke with Magana, who spoke about what life has been like since his mother’s passing.
Joshua Magana, Son: “I do know that I wake up every day and I can’t, I’m not able to talk to my mom. I know that she’s no longer here. And the most difficult part is knowing the circumstances of why she or how she died and knowing that we were doing everything, being precautious on the road, and then having this drunk driver come out of nowhere and have no remorse. Doesn’t even have the consciousness to remember what he did. It’s very difficult and knowing that he’s living his day, he doesn’t have a memory of what happened. He’s living his day as if what the hell happened and I’m living mine knowing exactly what happened. He killed my mom. When I regained consciousness in the accident, I looked at my mom and she was broken. Her arm was broken. She was fighting to breathe. Her lungs were punctured, that was explained afterwards. So that was a very difficult process to go through and that’s what keeps replaying on my mind. Like, why, why there were so many, they had cones. There were so many measures on the road for him to stop, and he didn’t.”
Magana also believes that despite charges being levied upon Nunez, it does not bring his mother back and he is calling for better legislation as it relates to drunk drivers. Nunez was read five charges in connection with the incident, namely, manslaughter by negligence, death by careless conduct, negligent harm, driving with alcohol above the prescribed limit and driving without due care and attention. He was granted a six-thousand-dollar bail with two sureties of the same amount. Magana says that the bail is his issue, as he believes that driving while drunk and killing someone in the process is tantamount to murder.
Joshua Magana, Son: “Officials have been doing their job in trying to get all the charges as possible. I know when I went to give my statement at the station, we also had the other victims because it was various vehicles that he impacted and then he hurt various people. So I know that they were doing due diligence. What to me doesn’t seem right or it’s not balanced is the fact that manslaughter, he was driving drunk and all the other charges and it’s so simple that he got a bail and he didn’t make the bail. That’s an unfortunate situation because basically he’s a murderer by what he did and he’s just walking the street as if nothing happened. We do believe that they need to be more strict with these people. They need to enforce the law. It needs to be heavier on them because it can’t be that a manslaughter, you just go to the court and you get your bail and two, three years and you get a charge or whatever it is. You know ? That does not compensate for the pain and the loss she has left. My mom was filled with life. She had so many dreams. We spoke about so many things we needed to do. We were just growing our family, a grandchild in the family and, you know, she’s going to my…,my niece is going to be missing out on everything. I know that my mom was definitely not ready and just for it to be basically swept under the rug under manslaughter and this guy walks free, it’s something hard to deal with everyday, you know?”
Nunez is to return to court on February 13.
