The Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) has been renamed to the Gender Based Violence Response and Investigative Unit. The name change took effect yesterday as was confirmed by the Police Commissioner on Tuesday.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Effective January 1st, which is tomorrow, we’re changing the name of DVU. It is no longer going to be known or called DVU. It’s going to be called Gender-Based Violence Response and Investigation Unit. So again, it covers every aspect of gender-based violence which will also include crimes committed against children.”
According to an official release from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the name change was made after consultations. The release went on to say that it also reflects the department’s broader commitment to addressing the complexities and challenges associated with gender-based violence (GBV) in ALL its forms. The ministry added that the name change comes as it is recognized that gender-based violence affects individuals of all genders, ages, and communities.
