Over a hundred cab drivers gathered in front of the Office of Mayor Gualberto Wally Nunez in San Pedro Town this morning clamouring for a meeting. This particular situation began brewing earlier this week when San Pedro Express Water Taxi began operating at its new location where taxi drivers were banned from doing business. Instead, a group of foreign businessmen have reportedly teamed up using a recent shipment of golf carts to ferry passengers on the island without a taxi license. According to Valentin Awayo, President of the Taxi Federation, ten of the island’s taxi associations are being affected by this arrangement and they want a resolution. He noted that this morning’s protest came out of a decision made last night at a meeting of the federation. He explained to Love News that they have been seeking an audience with Mayor Nunez for over six months as there are other issues faced by taxi drivers that need to be addressed.
Police were called out to the mayor’s office and had relocated the protestors to the Central Park. We will keep following this story as it develops. Love News was told this evening that further actions are being discussed by the taxi federation
