Consumer Confidence in Belize Reaches Year-High in December, Climbing to 48.0

Consumer confidence in Belize saw a significant boost in December 2024, reaching an index score of 48.0; the highest level recorded for the year.  According to the latest report from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), this marks a 7.6% increase from November’s index of 44.7 and continues an upward trend observed over the past three months. The Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) measures public sentiment regarding the country’s economic conditions, individual financial outlooks, and willingness to make major purchases. The closer the index moves to 100, the greater the optimism among consumers. December’s rise suggests growing confidence among Belizeans, despite lingering economic challenges.  The SIB report highlighted improvements across all three key components of consumer confidence, namely, the Durable Goods Sentiment, which indicates a stronger willingness among consumers to make major purchases, such as homes, cars, and appliances. The other category is the Present Financial Situation, which signals that consumers felt better about their current economic standing compared to a year ago. In the third category of Future Expectations, it was noted that consumers possessed greater optimism about economic conditions over the next twelve months. With all this, however, there was an urban and rural divide. Consumer confidence rose in both urban and rural areas, with urban residents showing a more substantial increase. The index for urban consumers grew by 9.7%, reaching 47.1, while rural consumers experienced a 6% rise to 48.8. Meanwhile, male consumers saw a 7.2% increase in their confidence index, reaching 50.2, while female consumers registered an 8% rise to 46.0. SIB’s release, which is a study on December 2024 signals an uptrend which could be a result of the commercial holiday season. Despite this, the rise in durable goods sentiment is particularly promising, as it may translate into increased household spending and economic growth in the months ahead.
