The low-lying bridge that connects Santa Elena and San Ignacio will be replaced. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing has announced that the contract has been awarded to M&M Engineering Consultants Ltd. The project aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and connectivity for residents and visitors alike. Preliminary design concepts reveal a modern, reinforced concrete bridge utilizing pre-cast elements. The proposed structure will feature nine spans with a total length of 95.5 meters and a width of 6 meters. The design will accommodate a single traffic lane and a dedicated pedestrian walkway, ensuring safer passage for both vehicles and pedestrians. The construction phase is expected to last four months, beginning on 17 March. During this period, the site will be closed to all traffic to facilitate the safe removal of the existing timber bridge and the construction of the new structure. Motorists are advised to plan their routes and utilize alternative crossings, including the New Macal Bridge and the Hawkesworth Bridge. Please note that the Hawkesworth Bridge will operate in one direction only (from San Ignacio to Santa Elena) during the construction period.
