Election Reminder: Labour Department Urges Employers to Allow Time for Voting

As Belizeans prepare to head to the polls for the General Elections tomorrow, the Labour Department is reminding employers of their legal obligation to allow workers to go out and vote. The department reminded that under Section 29 of the Representation of the People Act, employers are required to grant reasonable time off for employees to vote and are prohibited from deducting wages or imposing penalties for doing so. Labour officials define “reasonable time off” as sufficient time for employees to travel to their designated polling stations, vote, and return to work. Employers are urged to consider factors such as travel distance, transportation availability, and expected wait times when granting leave for voting. For employees who must travel long distances, the Labour Department is encouraging flexibility to ensure that every voter has the opportunity to exercise their right without undue hardship. Failure to comply with these legal requirements, or any attempts to intimidate or interfere with an employee’s right to vote, may result in legal consequences, including fines or imprisonment.
