Blue Economy Sees Collaboration As Tool To Combat Coastal Erosion

The Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation is hoping to collaborate with various entities to strengthen the country’s fight against coastal erosion. Several coastal communities across the country remain under threat from erosion despite implementing preventative measures. The issue is threatening residents that live along Belize’s coastlines as the sea continues to erode portions of their properties. Yesterday, CEO of the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation Beverly Wade spoke on the issue and what is being done to tackle it head-on.

CEO Wade also weighed in on the frustration expressed by residents of Monkey River, Toledo, who believe there is a need for more immediate action.

While some preventative measures have proven effective others have brought additional issues. Last year, Punta Gorda residents placed used tires along portions of the coastline, which led to an uptick in mosquitoes and a rise in dengue cases in the municipality.
