The blatant disregard for authority was on full display last night when police officers came under fire by a civilian on a dirt bike. Corporal Manuel Chub was shot multiple times to the body and was fortunate to survive the injuries. Many in the court of public opinion have been clamoring for harsh punishment for the shooter. We join Reporter Vejea Alvarez who confirmed that Stanley Flowers has since been arrested and charged.
RADIO: “QRT assistance needed at Eruption. The corporal got shot by a dread man.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: That was the distress call that was sent out after Corporal Manuel Chub was shot several time to the body by Stanley Flowers on Saturday around 12:50am. Chub and another officer were attempting to apprehend Flowers outside Eruption Nightclub near mile 11 on the Philip Goldson Highway when he opened fire on them. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says the cops were responding to reports of an armed man inside the nightclub and encountered Flowers in the parking lot.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Just before midnight police received information of a male person inside Eruption Nightclub compound who was armed with a firearm. Based on that a team of police officers, Corporal Chub and another police, went to the area and upon entering the compound they saw the individual fitting the description as was relayed to them.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: That man was 36 year old Stanley Flowers, a Crooked Tree villager who immediately opened fire on the officers.
RADIO: “Shots fired. I repeat shots fired. We are under fire I repeat.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Despite coming under fire the cops exited their mobile and attempted to apprehend Flowers who let off a second barrage of bullets hitting Chub multiple times to the body. The gunman then fled on a black and blue motorcycle but was confronted by officers near the Burrell Boom junction.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “The Sand Hill police was notified and they proceeded towards Belize City with the view to see if they would be able to apprehend the individual. Again they encountered in him on the highway and upon seeing the police mobile he fired multiple shots at the police mobile causing severe damages to that vehicle. The police were able to knock him down with the vehicle off his motorcycle and he was eventually detained and the firearm, a 9mm pistol, was found on his person.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Fortunately Chub’s injuries were not life threatening. Williams saiid he was rushed to the hospital and received immediate medical attention.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Chub was rushed to the hospital and I must say that he has been treated and released, he’s in good health and spirits at this time.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: While the officer wasn’t seriously injured Williams says he does agree there is a need for officers to be better equipped for such encounters through the use of bullet proof vests.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Yeah we do understand that bulletproof vests are a necessity and we have tried our best to obtain some recently. We are hoping that we’ll be able to get some more. It has to be done incrementally. The cost of bulletproof vests is expensive but at the same time I must say it is far less than if an officer were to be killed in the line of duty because of not having one. We would pay more to bury that officer and to give to his family so it is more effective for us to get these vests and so it is something that we have to discuss and see what we can do to be able to make sure that every police officer has one. So it’s a dissuasion we must have.”
Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Flowers has since been charged with attempted murder.
Love News understands that at the scene, forensics found eight nine-millimeter expended shells, a black and silver Smith and Wesson nine millimeter pistol and a nine-millimeter magazine.
