The CEO of the Ministry of Transport, Chester Williams, has emphasized the urgent need for stronger enforcement and structural reforms within the department, citing public safety as a top national priority. The CEO confirmed that meetings have been ongoing with Chief Transport Officer to explore a range of improvements. These include the introduction of a two-shift system to ensure better officer coverage throughout the day and night, and an increase in the number of trained traffic wardens deployed across the country. The Ministry is also reviewing internal enforcement procedures and considering policy changes to strengthen accountability within the department. Williams explained that these moves come amid growing concerns that they have observed.

Chester Williams, CEO, Ministry of Transport: “I have had a number of meetings with the Chief Transport Officer and certainly there is going to be changes made in how we do business. I have noted that there is a serious gap in enforcement when it comes to our traffic laws and so my instruction to the Chief Transport Officer is to ensure that we do have adequate officers on our streets and our highways to be able to enforce these regulations. Laws were not put in place just to put them in place but rather to make sure that people comply and where there is fair incompliance then adequate action should be taken. And so one of the thing we’re looking at is to increase the number of traffic wardens across the country. We want to be able to have at least a two shift system where we can have traffic wardens on our highways at least until twelve midnight everyday. On weekends perhaps until 3 a.m. that’s when nightclubs close and people would tend to drive the highway or within the local municipalities under the influence. So again increasing our number of personnel to be able to meet the demands is important so we’re working on that but even before we get there in terms of the increase in personnel I still believe that there is a lot more that we can do to be able to ensure that we make this country safer.”
The Ministry intends to roll out key changes in the coming months.
