Ancient Tomb of First Caracol Ruler Unearthed in Major Maya Discovery

The Institute of Archaeology (IA), under the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), has confirmed the discovery of the tomb of Te K’ab Chaak, the first known ruler and founder of the royal dynasty of Caracol, Belize’s largest ancient Maya site. (CARACOL KING VO) The find was made during the 2025 field season by the Caracol Archaeological Project, led by Drs. Arlen and Diane Chase of the University of Houston. The discovery was made under a formal permit issued by NICH. Located in the Northeast Acropolis at Caracol, the tomb contained a remarkable collection of jadeite ornaments, intricately carved bone tubes, pottery vessels, a mosaic jadeite mask, and a rare spondylus shell, an assemblage that points to Te K’ab Chaak’s elite status and strong diplomatic ties with central Mexico, including Teotihuacan. These connections suggest high-level political relationships dating as far back as the early 4th century AD. The burial is estimated to date to around 331 AD and is accompanied by evidence of elite ritual activity, consistent with other high-status burials in nearby structures. Artifacts linked to central Mexico, such as Pachuca green obsidian and Teotihuacan-style weaponry, add further depth to the find’s historical significance. Supported by the University of Houston and several international foundations, the research effort will continue under IA’s supervision. Future studies will explore ancient DNA, isotopic data, and artifact reconstruction, including the restoration of the jadeite mask.
