Belize Investment Summit Opens With Push to Position Nation as Regional Hub

The Belize Investment Summit 2025 officially opened this morning at the Grand Caribe, following a welcome reception last night that brought together investors, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the region and beyond.  With the theme “Bridging Markets, Building Resilience,” the three-day summit aims to position Belize as a strategic investment hub at the crossroads of CARICOM, Central America, and Southeastern Mexico.  Delivering the keynote address, Prime Minister John Briceño underscored Belize’s role as a “beacon of opportunity” with its unique geographic location, rich biodiversity, and youthful English-speaking population. The Prime Minister highlighted advances in climate finance, debt restructuring, and marine conservation as examples of Belize’s leadership in aligning economic growth with environmental stewardship.  He also highlighted the government’s push for digitalization of services and information.

John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “We are accelerating the digital transformation of government. Business registration, trade licensing and tax services are moving fully online. The new platforms will cut processing times dramatically reducing what once took weeks to be done in days. For investors this means less bureaucracy, more predictability and lower costs of doing business. Simplified regulations through the Belize Companies and Corporate Affairs Registry we have modernized incorporation, insolvency and business reporting requirements for entrepreneurs especially MSMEs this reduces red tape and levels the playing field. For larger investors it gives assurance that the legal and regulatory framework meets international standards. We are strengthening the backbone of economic management. The Ministry of Finance has rolled out stronger fiscal rules, procurement reform and modern debt management systems. These changes reduce corruption risk, improves oversight and enhances Belize credit worthiness; a reassurance for lenders, donors and private investors alike. Reflecting the strong integrity of our financial system the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force has assessed Belize has having the strongest technical compliance rating in the world. With this stellar technical compliance and effectiveness ratings instead of being gray listed or blacklisted Belize has been white listed by the AML Compliance Standards the standard setting body known as the Financial Action Task Force for regular follow up, a status achieved by less than 15% of all the countries in the world. At the same time Belize knows that growth must be broad based. MSMEs employ 7 in 10 Belizeans and they must be able to grow, formalize, and access capital. Through BELTRAIDE’s small business development center and in partnership with financial institutions thousands of MSMEs have already benefitted from training, financing and mentorship. These are not small wins. They are the foundation of an economy where opportunity is inclusive. Together these reforms send a clear message: Belize is committed to efficiency, transparency and predictability for investors. And so having reformed how business is done within our borders the question becomes how do we position Belize beyond our borders ? How do we leverage geography, diplomacy and trade agreements to create opportunities at scale ? This is where our team, bridging markets, building resilience, come to life. Belize is more than a domestic market of 430,000  people. We are a strategic nexus. Through CARICOM we connect 20 million Caribbean consumers.”

One of today’s most anticipated speakers was Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts International, who presented on “Redefining the Luxury Experience.” Stewart emphasized the importance of innovation, sustainable tourism, and brand building to position Belize as a world-class destination. Later today, he is also scheduled to participate in an interactive session, “Flip the Script with Adam Stewart,” where Belize’s tourism stakeholders will lead the discussion on regional investment and the future of Caribbean hospitality.

Adam Stewart, Sandals Resort International: “We have to be intentional as to who we want to invest in this country. We believe, maybe we are wrong, but we believe in a saying where we say, mass follows class. You never see anyone on social media, and I know you don’t love social media Minister but social media is a thing and it’s not going anywhere. And billions of media impressions, if done right, are influencing people to explore your destination. So we have to be intentional on the brands that we want to invite into the destination that are influential, that people want to assimilate with and they want to, you know, be a part of. And then critically important, there are two drivers for Sandals when we look to invest. We are looking at destination, natural beauty, and we’re looking at the people. And I think it is fair to say that the nationals of this country are extraordinary. They are humble from what I know of them. They are hard working, they can get the job done, and we as public and private sector coming together have to train to ensure that they are equipped to fulfill. I would encourage the investors here and the government here to focus on design. With mother nature as your tapestry and your background you can do extraordinary things with design here. Dream. It is critically important, it’s sustainable. I don’t have a lot of time and I could sit here for hours and talk about all the major drivers that it takes on the luxury spectrum I think Belize is a tapestry. I think it is a platform that has amazing opportunity. I think we have to fight for it. Go into the marketplace and fight for it. We live in the e-commerce and PM I know it’s a part of your portfolio. We live in this e-commerce world and Air BnB is a real thing and it’s going absolutely nowhere. And the OTAs, the online travel agencies, the Expedia’s and the Pricelines they’re not going anywhere. But what we find in our world is we work with a collection of about 25,000 travel advisors. These are the human beings that in the 2000 dot com era everyone said would be exterminated through technology. They’ve never been bigger, they’ve never been stronger. They do what dot coms can’t do. They go to PTA meetings. They go to the local golf course in the source market. They go to the local chamber of commerce and they talk about your country in a way that a computer cannot talk to you. They get emotionally connected and the more you invest in them and get them here, because seeing is believing, is the more they go home and they focus their entire careers on your country and what an incredible privilege that is.”

The summit continues tomorrow with more high-level panel discussions on investment readiness, the Blue and Green Economies, public-private partnerships, and opportunities for Belizean businesses in global trade.  The event is being attended by government officials, foreign diplomats, international investors, and Belizean entrepreneurs, all exploring new pathways to boost resilience, connectivity, and sustainable development in Belize.
