A new report from the Organization of American States (OAS) has highlighted Belize’s growing influence within the hemispheric body. According to the report, released today, Belize’s active engagement at the OAS in 2025 has been marked by key achievements in democracy, human rights, security, and education. The report underscores Belize’s leadership in hosting the VII MIRPS meeting on forced displacement, the deployment of an OAS Electoral Observation Mission for the March 2025 general elections, and progress in the Belize–Guatemala territorial process under OAS mediation. The OAS also expanded its cooperation with Belize through initiatives such as the launch of the National Cybersecurity Strategy, new training and equipment for arms and ammunition control, and the Refugee Department’s Border Presence Project. Additionally, Belize’s accession to the Inter-American Convention on the Rights of Older Persons and the awarding of 376 OAS scholarships to Belizean students between 2023 and 2025 reflect advances in rights protection and education. The report adds that the Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca, Prime Minister John Briceño, and Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam all played central roles in OAS-led initiatives, reinforcing Belize’s position as an active and trusted partner in the regional organization. The report highlights that Belize’s collaboration with the OAS not only strengthens democratic governance at home but also contributes to peace, development, and integration across the Americas.
