After months of planning and meetings, the Ministry of Transportation has finally handed over three electric buses to Westline Bus Company. The buses were handed over in Belmopan yesterday as a furtherance to the ministry’s E-mobility pilot project, supported by the European Union and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Minister of Transportation Dr. Louis Zabaneh says that the handing over is a critical moment for the development of the bus industry in Belize, which is the realization of a vision. Westline owner Sergio Chuc says it’s a vision he has seen since the fall of Novelo’s Bus Company.
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Michael Lund says that this stage of the e-mobility project builds upon the initial launch, which was done in collaboration with the Belize City Council. The buses being operated by Westline will be used to gather data for the project.
Westline officially rolled out the Benque Viejo to Belize City bus run yesterday, and will be rolling out the Corozal to Belize City run in the next few weeks.
