The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) is calling for a transparent and inclusive consultation process as discussions continue around a potential telecommunications transaction involving Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) and Speednet. In a statement issued today, the Chamber welcomed the Government of Belize’s decision to allow for continued consultations following a recent Cabinet presentation on the proposed transaction. The BCCI described the move as a prudent step that aligns with principles of transparency, due process, and responsible governance, particularly given the far-reaching implications such a deal could have for national competition, consumer welfare, and the private sector. The Chamber stressed that any telecommunications transaction of this nature requires a thorough, meaningful, and inclusive consultation process. It is advocating for a comprehensive and objective assessment of key factors, including market competition, regulatory considerations, consumer choice, pricing, service quality, and the broader economic impact.
As part of its engagement efforts, the BCCI has formally invited Belize Telemedia Limited, a member of the Chamber, to make a presentation to its Executive Council and wider membership. According to the Chamber, the aim is to promote informed and transparent dialogue, allowing stakeholders to seek clarity, raise questions, and share diverse perspectives. The BCCI noted that this is especially important in a rapidly evolving telecommunications market that now includes emerging competitors such as satellite-based service providers. The Chamber said it is awaiting a response to its invitation and reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the Government of Belize, regulatory authorities, and industry stakeholders. The BCCI emphasized that its primary objective is to ensure that any outcome serves the long-term best interests of Belize’s economy and supports a fair, competitive, and innovative business environment.
