BTL Employees Vote in Favor of Proposed Acquisition

Members of the Belize Communication Workers Union (BCWU) have voted in favor of the proposed acquisition involving Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), following a vote held on Friday among union members and BTL staff.  Information reaching Love News indicates that the majority of those who participated in the vote supported the acquisition. The exercise, organized by management saw employees indicate their position through a survey.  According to figures shared, 79 percent, or 257 of the 327 employees who responded, voted in favor of the proposed acquisition. However, BTL currently employs 544 staff members, meaning that approximately 53 percent of the workforce either did not participate in the survey or voted against the proposal.  At this time, the BCWU has not formally announced its official position on the acquisition. Love News reached out to BCWU President Jermaine Williams for comment, but he had not responded up to news time. Meanwhile, National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) President Ella Waight says the umbrella union respects the views expressed by the BCWU and its members, while making it clear that the vote was not connected to the NTUCB’s recent General Council meeting or its position on the matter.

The proposed BTL acquisition remains under public and regulatory scrutiny, with differing views emerging from labor groups, employees, and stakeholders. Love News will continue to follow developments and seek clarification from the BCWU leadership as the process moves forward.
