St. John’s College today marked a historic and spiritual milestone with a special Mass of Blessing at the Fordyce Chapel, commemorating the Memorial of St. Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs of Japan. The ceremony, held at 10:00 a.m., was led by Very Reverend Arturo Sosa, S.J., Superior General of the Society of Jesus, who served as principal celebrant. The event formed part of activities highlighting the chapel’s legacy and the continuing Jesuit mission within the institution and the wider Belizean community. Students, faculty, alumni, and invited guests gathered inside the chapel for the liturgical celebration, which featured scripture readings, hymns, and prayers reflecting on faith, sacrifice, and service, values central to Jesuit education. During his message, the Superior General emphasized the importance of faith formation and community in shaping young leaders grounded in compassion and responsibility. Prime Minister John Briceno along with other government ministers attended the mass which led to a delay in today’s house meeting.
Today’s observance forms part of broader efforts by the college to honor its Jesuit heritage while reaffirming its commitment to education guided by spiritual values. The program also recognized contributors and supporters who played a role in preserving and strengthening the chapel’s place in campus life. The Fordyce Chapel, first dedicated in 1956, remains one of the most iconic spiritual landmarks at St. John’s College and continues to serve as a center of worship and reflection for generations of students.
