The Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS) wants to revise the country’s labeling requirements for prepackaged foods and is seeking feedback on the proposed changes. The BBS wants all imported or locally produced prepacked goods to have bilingual labelling, nutritional information, and allergen facts. The entity says the move aims to modernize the current labeling framework to align it with global trends and enhance consumer protection. However, before it can make the changes official, the BBS wants to hear from the public, producers, and importers. This evening, Standards Officer Lloyd Orellano spoke to our newsroom about the changes and the rationale behind the need to update the country’s standards.
Orellano explained that once the feedback is compiled, it will be reviewed by a technical committee that will deliberate on the final policy changes.
Persons wishing to provide feedback to the BBS have until December 31, 2024, to email their concerns to helpdesk@bbs.gov.bz.
