Belize Government Focusing on Supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises

The government is working to improve its services to be more conducive to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), according to Prime Minister John Briceno. MSMEs account for fifty percent of the country’s gross domestic product and seventy percent of national employment. In 2022, GOB introduced its plan to award twenty percent of all tendering contracts to MSMEs by March 2025. Yesterday, PM Briceno spoke about the work ahead to better support local businesses.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “When you look at the legislation that we have for the MSMEs, we are addressing these issues and recognize that there are certain also systematic challenges that we have to face especially in certain departments that we have to work with the public officers for them to be more conscious that they are here to serve the public interest and if they serve the public interest they are also serving their own interests as a public officer. So we recognize them, but we’re working on them systematically addressing them one by one.”
