In an effort to strengthen ties with its diaspora community, the Diaspora Relations Unit (DRU) within the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations launched a one-year campaign, which saw members of the diaspora register. Those who registered had the chance to win a piece of land in Belize. The campaign commenced on March 1, 2022, and saw an overwhelming response from members of the diaspora. The registration process was easy, and applicants were required to provide basic personal details such as their name, email address, and country of residence. After a year-long registration period, the DRU drew the raffle today. Senior Liaison Officer in the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Sandra Mahler, explained that the winners of the raffle will be awarded a piece of land in the Mile-Eight community.
Mahler says that they hope that this campaign will not only help to build a stronger relationship between the diaspora and the government of Belize but will also encourage members of the diaspora to visit Belize and invest in the country. Belizean living abroad, Michelle Orio Rowan, explains that for her, this campaign is important since she lives in the United Kingdom. With a six-hour time difference between the two countries, she says this will be a great way for her to keep up with what’s happening in her home country.
