The Belize Premier Basketball League has unveiled a new management structure and three new commissioners to go with it. Under the banner “New League, New Leadership,” the league is implementing what it calls a “3-pronged approach” to its operations. This focuses on effectively creating, managing, and maintaining all the essential elements needed to produce a high-quality basketball product that the Belizean public can rally behind and be proud of. Taking the lead as commissioner will be Claudio Leal, supported by deputy commissioners Francis Arzu and Amir Garcia. As a key part of this new structure, the league is focusing on inclusion, featuring teams and communities stretching across the entire country. To organize this expanded participation, the league has established two distinct divisions. The Mayan Conference, comprised of teams in the north and south, and the Toucan Conference, comprised of teams in the east and west. The winner from each conference will then face off for the national championship: The Jaguar Cup. Commissioner Leal told Love News that the league’s bylaws place a special focus on player and team conduct.

Claudio Leal, Commissioner, BPBL: “Some of the expectations from the bylaws 2025, which pertains to player and staff conduct which we know is a big deal. The standards that we are espying the code of conduct, the expectation we have for our players, team owners. Standards for sportsmanship, we expect nothing but professionalism and good ethical behavior. Prohibition of gambling, drug use, and public misconduct. Players, coaches, owners or managers are not allowed to articulate negative comments towards referees, statisticians, commissioners, opponents or the league during any post-game interview or social media platform. Violation of these Code of Conducts will result in fines or suspension. Signing, committing and adhering to the league’s Code of Conduct manual is paramount. A disciplinary committee have been formed with responsibility to listen to protests and legitimate concerns by teams and would be the next level of appeal and decision making for the tournament. This committee will consist of three personnel selected by the executive committee. Fighting between players is an automatic two-game suspension. Let me repeat, fighting amongst players, between players is an automatic two-game suspension unless the disciplinary decide otherwise. Verbal abuse, physical threat or physical abuse directed or inflicted against the commissioner or any of the BPBL committee members, game officials or security is an automatic expulsion of the persons or persons involved and can lead to total expulsion of the team involved if deemed necessary.”
The first game of the BPBL will be held on May 16 at the Belize Civic Center with all the teams taking part.
