Belizean Fisherman Wins 76 Gladding Memorial Award in Bahamas

Belizean fisherman wins the 76 Gladding Memorial Award in Bahamas. Paulino Elmer Rodriguez, who was also recognized as fisher of the year in 2019, is this year’s recipient for the prestigious award at the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI). The award is given by the GCFI to fishers with an enduring vision for the sustainable and wise use of marine resources. Rodriguez competed against 13 nominees from all over the world including Mexico, The Dominican Republic, The Bahamas, and the United States. Rodriguez, who has over 40 years in the industry, told us about his journey leading up to this accomplishment.

Rodriguez told Love news that he is passionate about what he does, and he wants other fishers in the country to understand that sustainable fishing and conservation is essential in order to secure a future for the fishing industry. 

It is the first time a Belizean is winning the award. Rodriguez also served more than 25 years on the Executive Committee of National Fishermen producers Cooperative society Ltd, progressing from member to chairman
