Belizean Students Shine at Model Organization of American States (MOAS)

A delegation of Belizean students earned international recognition after putting on stellar performances at the Forty-Second Model Organization of American States (MOAS). Over the weekend, the team of students and faculty members of the Belize High School were endorsed by the OAS for their hard work. Since 2015, the institution has been working with the MOAS to promote democratic values among the youth of the Americas. The team attended the three-day conference in Washington D.C. The delegates were tasked with researching three OAS member states, identifying problems in those states, and proposing solutions. Teacher Judy Carrillo, a delegation member, spoke about the experience and the importance of advocating for greater youth participation.
Jennylee Francisco, Academic Counselor, BHS, added that the school emphasizes the practical use of the skills students need to excel at these types of events, through integrating the use of those skills in every scenarios. She said that BHS also provides various opportunities for students to use those skills, by making programs like the MOAS available to all students.
The student delegates were Dmitri Arguelles, Leandro Avila, Jiyaa Chawla, Gavin Dakers, Jules Diab, Slater Evert, Michael Habet, Anthony Leslie, Jade Mena, Akib Pathen, Ramey Patton, Zara Reyes, Katrina Sadarangani, Varun Sadarangani, Sophia Usher, Vinayak Vanjani, Oliver Wu, Ezekiel Zabaneh. Faculty Advisors are Jamie Usher, Judy Carrillo, and Jennylee Francisco.
