It’s usually a good thing when a country reduces its expenditure on imports. Conversely, when revenues from exports go down it is a cause for concern. But that’s the situation that the Statistical Institute of Belize reported this week, with its latest external trade statistics. The data shows that for the period January 2023 to May 2023, imports saw a marginal decrease, while exports fell by over 50 percent. Tiffany Vasquez, Statistician 2 with the SIB explained in more detail.
The Sib also noted that, some exports did see growth within the five-month period. These were soybean oil and cattle exports, which both nearly doubled during the period.
