Belmopan City Council Focuses on Citizen Security: Mayor Cawich Reveals Plans for Enhanced Surveillance

Following the swearing-in on March 12, the Belmopan City Council hit the ground running, with several projects in the pipeline. Mayor Pablo Cawich said that one of the upcoming projects will focus on enhancing citizen security in the municipality. Cawich says that the council will establish a community surveillance system, which will serve to deter crime as well as help to capture those who commit crimes.

Pablo Cawich, Belmopan Mayor: “One of the things that we also have in our plans in the manifesto specifically relating to the security of the city. We are scheduled to embark on a community surveillance system so that we can start capturing evidence that will allow us to improve our conviction rate. As we know many crimes occur in the country and there is a low conviction rate so that is part of the plans that we thought of that we need to try and deter crime and one of the main mechanisms to deter crime is knowledge of being caught. I would just like to, due to the incident from yesterday, I would like to ask the Belmopan people to please let us continue being law abiding citizens and I wish everybody a safe week and may God bless everyone.”

Cawich and his team won a commanding victory in the March 6 municipal elections, which saw him beat his opponent Jaclyn Burns by more than eight hundred and eighty votes.
