The Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) have finally recovered the flags that were stolen by the Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) back in September. Today, the flags were returned to the Leader of the BTV, Wil Maheia, who has been fervently pleading for them to be returned ever since they were stolen. On September, 18, Maheia led an excursion to Sarstoon Island to erect the flags in commemoration of the country’s Independence. However, they were met with aggression from the GAF, who followed the Belizean vessels into Belizean territory and illegally seized possession of the country’s national symbols. Two days later at the official Independence Day Ceremony, Prime Minister, John Briceño announced that the Belizean embassy in Guatemala had retrieved the flags. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced they had received the flag from the embassy, however, Maheia wanted it back in the possession of the BTV. Today the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially handed it over.
