Cabinet Approves New Drug Registration Fees to Speed Access to Medicines

The Cabinet has given its approval for the Ministry of Health and Wellness to amend the fees for drug registration applications.  According to the government, the new fee structure is designed to better reflect the administrative work involved and incentivize a more efficient review process. Under the updated regulations, the fee for the streamlined “Reliance Pathway” will be significantly reduced from $500 to $100. This is intended to encourage pharmaceutical stakeholders to use this more efficient review process, which relies on assessments from other recognized national authorities.  The Reliance Pathway is a faster, more streamlined process. It’s used for drugs that have already been thoroughly reviewed and approved by a reputable regulatory body in another country. It’s like a quick-check process, where Belize relies on the work already done by another nation.  The second fee adjustment is for the “Full Dossier Review” which will be increased from $100 to $200. The Full Dossier Review is a more detailed and time-consuming process. This pathway is used for drugs that have not been previously reviewed and approved by an internationally recognized authority. This requires a full, comprehensive assessment of all the drug’s safety and efficacy data from scratch.  It is the belief of the government that the restructuring of fees will result in more efficient regulatory decisions and provide Belizeans with faster access to safe, effective, and quality-assured medicines.
