CARICOM Project Helps Belizean Farmers Combat Climate Change with Greenhouses

Several farmers are now better equipped to protect their produce thanks to a project between the Ministry of Agriculture and the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF). In 2019, the Honey Production Redevelopment Support and Cover Structures project was launched to improve the country’s food security. The projects sought to increase Belize’s honey production and construct more greenhouses for farmers. Today, both programs came to an end and, according to the Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai, they greatly increased the agriculture sector’s ability to combat the effects of climate change.

Among the new bee farmers was Miss World Belize Elise Vernon, who was able to begin honey production in her own backyard. She spoke about how the project supported her dream and changed the way she sees honeybees.

Over fifty farmers participated in the projects.
