Christians Mark Ash Wednesday, Begin Lenten Season Across Belize

Christians across Belize and around the world today celebrated Ash Wednesday, ushering in the solemn season of Lent. The observance, characterized by prayer, fasting, and reflection, signals the start of a 40-day period of spiritual preparation leading up to Easter. Today, our news team stopped by the St. Ann’s Anglican Church in Belmopan to speak with Rev. Lizbeth Tulloch, who explained the significance of Ash Wednesday, and the Ashes to Go program that her church offers residents of the capital.

And if you ever wondered why the ashes are placed on one’s forehead, according to the Reverend, it’s for others to see that you believe in God and are honoring lent.

United Democratic Party Senator Patrick Faber was among the first public officials to issue a message this morning, extending blessings to the Christian community and encouraging believers to approach the season with humility, compassion and faith.  Religious leaders say Ash Wednesday sets the tone for the weeks ahead, calling believers not only to personal reflection but also to greater kindness and service to others, values they say remain especially important in today’s society./
