Tonight, 25-year-old Edward Saldano, also known as “Scrubbie,” remains in police custody after a dramatic court appearance. Saldano, who was shot in the foot by police during his arrest, arrived at court in a wheelchair. Saldano was charged with discharging a firearm in public and two counts of firearm and ammunition possession without a license. The arraignment was not without its complications. Initially, Saldano claimed he was only served with two charges, related to the gun and ammunition, and not the charge of discharging a firearm. The Senior Magistrate paused the proceedings to verify the claim with the arresting officer. It was later confirmed that Saldano had indeed been served with all three charges. Police allege that on February 23, 2025, Saldano discharged a firearm on George Street. He is also charged with possessing a 9-millimeter pistol and multiple rounds of ammunition without the necessary licenses. In court, Saldano pleaded not guilty to all charges. Saldano told the court he was represented by attorney Leroy Banner. However, Banner was not present and informed the court via phone that he was unable to attend. Due to Saldano’s complaints of needing further medical treatment, the Senior Magistrate ordered that he be taken to the hospital for treatment before being remanded to the Belize Central Prison. The facts of the case state that on February 23, police received reports of shots fired on George Street. Reviewing camera footage, they identified Saldano firing a gun into the air while riding a motorcycle. After evading police for several days, Saldano was apprehended on March 4 at the Michael Finnegan Market, where police say he was found in possession of a firearm. He is a resident of Amara Avenue. Following his hospital visit, Saldano remains in police custody at the Queen Street Police Station. The exact date of his next court appearance is currently pending.
