FECTAB Expresses Outrage Over Government’s Decision to Double Entrance Fees at Archaeological Reserves

The Federation of Cruise Tourism Associations of Belize (FECTAB) is steaming mad over the government’s decision to increase entrance fees at archaeological reserves in next year. Today, the organization held one of its impromptu press conferences and lashed out at the Belize Tourism Board and GOB. Last week, the Cabinet approved the move that will see fees in some reserves go from thirty dollars to sixty. The increase takes effect next November, but FECTAB is already opposing it. FECTAB’s President David Almendarez says the proposed uptick will burden small tour operators, who are still recovering from the pandemic.

Also joining today’s rallying cry was tour operator, Yhonny Rosado. He claims that plenty of tour operators have spoken out against the move but fear going public.

On Friday, Minister Francis Fonseca, whose ministry is responsible for NICH, stated that QUOTE “we have the lowest fees at our reserves in the entire region both in Central America and the Caribbean.” Unquote. He also stated that a full list of changes to fees will be released soon.
