A resident of the Stann Creek District lost his life on Saturday evening in a road traffic incident on the Southern Highway. 26-year-old Gideon Ishim fell out of a moving vehicle while on the job and died as a result of the injuries he received. Senior Superintendent of Police Hilberto Romero updated the media.

Sr.Supt. Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “Police respond to a fatal traffic accident at Santa Cruz Village. Upon their arrival they learned that Gideon Ishim, 26 years, fell from the back of a pickup truck. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. An investigation is being carried out. An IP has been served on the driver of the pickup pending further investigation at this time. The driver of that vehicle is liable and it is illegal to carry passengers in the back of pickups that is illegal that is not a vehicle that is authorized to take passengers.”

We also spoke to Ishim’s brother, Brian who explained that employees had complained about the driver’s recklessness while on the road.

Brian Ishim, Brother of Deceased: “He wasn’t going to work but then according to him they told him to go so he went. My father told him not to go it was holiday but he said you know we don’t get paid half day for a holiday so I’m going you know so he went. Then my other brother reached from work and he told us “You guys heard about the accident ?” Immediately I called the owner and that’s when he told me I called you back because I’m racing to catch up with the ambulance. Now when he caught up with the ambulance he called me. The first thing he told me was that my brother passed away and that was it. I have three brothers are working at the same place, this is not the first time they were complaining about that driver that he drives very like if he would want to overtake a next vehicle he would serve to the left and he would overtake close to the red it shouldn’t be like that. He complained to me a lot of times about it but then you know I believe that’s what happened and the furniture they were carrying at the moment wasn’t secured it wasn’t strapped down. If that guy had strapped down that safe it wouldn’t have fallen off the vehicle. I believe when he sped off that was when the ______fell off and my brother tripped into the highway.

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: So you’re saying that the furniture fell out of the vehicle.

Brian Ishim, Brother of Deceased: “Yeah.”

Harry Arzu, Stann Creek Correspondent: And your brother fell out of the vehicle along with it ?

Brian Ishim, Brother of Deceased: “Yes that’s correct because my brother was behind the vehicle holding the furniture, it wasn’t strapped down.”
