Guatemala’s Election Controversy: Prosecutors Threaten to Annul President-elect Arevalo’s Victory

Guatemala’s Prosecutors have threatened to annul the victory of President-elect Arevalo in today’s general elections. Statements by Curruchiche Morales and Angel Pineda Avila, the secretary generals of the Public Ministry sparked a domestic and international firestorm, marking what critics consider the latest – and most directly stated – effort to overturn President-elect Bernardo Arevalo’s election victory. Guatemala’s Court of Justice declared the result of this year’s election “unalterable”. Arevalo is scheduled to be sworn into office on January 14.
