Hattieville Mechanic Faces Attempted Murder Charges After Evading Police for Two Months

A Hattieville mechanic who evaded police for nearly two months following a stabbing incident in the Conch Shell Bay area is now behind bars, facing serious charges. This evening, 34-year-old Dorian Richard Garnett was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. He appeared unrepresented before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola in Court #1, where he was read three indictable charges: attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and dangerous harm. The charges stem from an incident on Friday, November 1, 2024, when Garnett allegedly stabbed 35-year-old Mark Usher in the chest during an altercation. During his court appearance, Garnett admitted to the incident, saying, “I neva meant to stab him, but it done happen.” He added that he wanted to plead guilty to avoid wasting the court’s time. However, due to the serious nature of the charges, no plea was taken. The Chief Magistrate ensured Garnett understood the charges and denied him bail. Garnett has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until his next court date on February 28. Police say Garnett managed to evade capture for almost two months before being detained over the weekend. Meanwhile, Mark Usher, the victim, suffered a single stab wound to the chest in the incident.
