Driving through the main road of San Estevan Village, Orange Walk is now much smoother thanks to upgrades to its infrastructure. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing has completed major road works on the highway. The upgrades were geared at enhancing the driving experience of residents and cane truck drivers. Prime Minister Johnny Briceño and CEO of Infrastructure Development and Housing, Victor Espat, weighed in on the importance of the project.
Victor Espat, CEO, Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing: “We are upgrading the main road that is passing through San Estevan Village. We’re upgrading it to hot mix standard. I know the minister has been speaking about trying to elevate the standards of the roads within the country and so this is kind of one of the pilot projects though the villages where we’re using hot mix. It also includes the installation of side drains and sidewalks. The project it is about 85% complete there are only a few more sidewalks and culverts that need to be installed.”
Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “One of the things we have in Plan Belize is that we’re trying to pave all the main streets in all the villages in the country and San Estevan being one of the bigger villages we decided to tackle this very quickly. It’s well done and we’re very proud of the work that has been done. Again I’m thankful to the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing for the excellent work that they have done. It’s a very long street it’s more than a mile plus in length and I think it’s making a significant improvement in the lives of the citizens of San Estevan.”
