Conejo Creek in the Toledo District has a brand new community center, thanks to the logging company Rax Mu Qiche. The Sarstoon Temash Institute of Indigenous Management SATIIM, notes that the community center was officially opened on Independence Day. Present at the opening ceremony were various government officials including Indigenous Peoples Affairs Commissioner Gregory Ch’oc. SATIIM also noted that it has helped Rax Mu Qiche to expand and improve its business practices over the past few years, leading to its first shipment of sustainable timber to the EU, following a US shipment in 2021. SATIIM said that the community center is just one of the ways that Rax Mu Qiche ha given back to its community and noted that every year the company provides holiday baskets to every village household. The institute said quote “Widespread illegal logging, unstandardized logging practices and poverty are the main drivers of deforestation in Toledo. Rax Mu Qiche is the exception, practicing a combination of data-based and Maya customary forest management,” end of quote.
