Man Shot Dead at Corozal Hotel, Police Probe Possible Drug Link

Police in northern Belize are investigating a fatal shooting that left one man dead in Corozal Town last night just after eight o’clock.  Police officers responded to reports of gunfire at Hotel Martin on First Avenue, where they discovered the motionless body of Eugene Collett Myers, a thirty-six-year-old self-employed resident of Calcutta Village, suffering from apparent gunshot injuries to the head.  Preliminary investigations indicate that Myers had been speaking on his phone when a male individual reportedly approached and fired a single shot, causing the fatal injury. Assistant Superintendent Hilberto Romero says investigators are following several leads and suspect the killing may be connected to drug activity.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “Information received is that Myers was in that are waiting for someone when a person with a firearm arrived and fired a single shot causing the fatal injury. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. We are seeking one suspect in regard to this murder. We believe it is drug related. The deceased had issues with several persons in Corozal and he was waiting for someone to do a transaction involving cash. He has been receiving threats and the person came there and fatally shot him. There is footage in the area, we will review those and see if we can get further information.”

Information emerging from authorities suggests that Myers had a significant criminal history, including prior arrests for drug trafficking, aggravated burglary, handling stolen goods, and involvement in an armed robbery. Records also indicate that his life had previously been targeted on November 9, 2025, where his vehicle was reportedly riddled with eleven nine-millimeter rounds while parked, though he was not inside at the time.  News archives further show that Myers was among four men charged in March 2019 in connection with a brazen robbery targeting money changers near the northern border. The charges included robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, while Myers and two others additionally faced attempted murder charges after the incident was captured on surveillance footage.
